2011 Arts Awards

The Educating in the Arts Award
recognizes an arts educator (not necessarily a teacher by profession) who has undertaken to impart artistic knowledge, skill and creative expression to others, on a regular basis and in a variety of settings.

Nominees are:

Greg Goodwin and Mary-Frances Goodwin, secondary school educators for over 30 years in instrumental music, vocal music and drama. Many Patrick Fogarty musical productions and award-winning bands testify to the Goodwins’ dedication to their students and to the arts.

Mayumi Kumagai, a retired secondary school music teacher who has an inexhaustible passion for educating young people in music, particularly string instruments and orchestral music. She is now in her 30th year conducting the Orillia Youth Symphony Orchestra,

Andrea Marcucci, the owner and artistic director of Orillia Dance Academy and a passionate and inspiring instructor who brings her love of artistry and a sense of fun to the classroom. Her dedication and high level of instruction are widely respected.

Robert Noble, an artist in granite who has been generous in passing on his skill and knowledge to the next generation. After a career producing outstanding memorials, he now mentors new sculptors and engravers, willingly and patiently sharing with them his skill and love of this art form.
The winner of the 2011 award for Educating in the Arts is Mayumi Kumagai.
The Arts Achievement Award recognizes the art or activity of a person or group who has made an outstanding artistic contribution – visual, theatrical, musical or literary – to the cultural life of the community.

Bill Bell, a distinguished author of young adult fiction. He has written over fifteen books, and is widely considered an innovator in literature for young adults. He is the winner of many outstanding awards including The Belgium Prize for Excellence, The Ruth Schwartz award, The Canadian Librarian Association Award. He is also a member of Orillia’s Hall of Fame.

Travis Shilling, a multi-talented creator of paintings, film and stage productions. His work can be seen in collections across North America and Europe, and has been shown in notable galleries in Canada, the USA and England. Travis has also moved into stage and film as a writer, producer and director.
The winner of the 2011 Arts Achievement Award is Travis Shilling.
The Community Arts Award
recognizes an individual, organization or corporation possessing the highest standards of motivation and service who has made a marked contribution to the cultural fabric of the community.

Nominees are:

The Champlain Seniors Service Club Music Makers, a group that has been volunteering its talent for over 20 years, bringing entertainment and enjoyment to seniors. Seniors themselves, the CSSC Music Makers play weekly for the Champlain Seniors club meetings as well as at least monthly for many seniors’ homes in Orillia.

Orillia Dance Academy, providing outstanding instruction in a variety of dance forms for almost 20 years. Its students, past and present, reflect the high-quality skill instruction and appreciation for the arts that they have received at ODA.

Evelyn Pollock, a multi-talented contributor to the Orillia arts scene. She is the past president of the Orillia Fine Arts Association and a member of Zephyr Art Gallery and the Mariposa Writers Guild. She encourages other artists by holding several workshops a year in her home.

Don Ross, the leader of a group in the early 1990’s that rallied the community and Orillia City Council behind a plan to create the Sam Steele Art Gallery, ultimately the Orillia Museum of Art and History. Don has continued to serve OMAH in many roles: as chairman of the second fundraising campaign, head of the art committee, board member and benefactor.
The winner of the 2011 Community Arts Award is the Champlain Seniors Service Club Music Makers.
“Orillia has an especially vibrant arts community,” says Anita Purcell, President of the Orillia & District Arts Council. “These annual arts awards celebrate the exceptional and talented people who contribute to it. It’s especially important that these awards recognize not only individuals who create art but also art educators and individuals and groups who are arts patrons and supporters.”
